Michael Olise played a starring role as Bayern Munich demolished Atalanta 6-1 to virtually guarantee their place in the Champions League quarterfinals.

Vincent Kompany's side put in a powerhouse away performance in the first leg at Stadio di Bergamo, running roughshod over opponents who had squeezed past Bayern's Bundesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund in the previous round.

Olise was a constant threat, running the home side ragged and firing in wonderful efforts with his trusty left boot in each half.

Josip Stanisic opened the scoring in the 12th minute, with Serge Gnabry, Nicolas Jackson and Jamal Musiala adding to the rout before Mario Pasalic grabbed an injury-time consolation for the Italians.

Bayern's handsome victory stretched their winning to seven games across all competitions, with Atalanta now winless in four since their comeback victory against Dortmund.

The pattern of the game was established quickly with the visitors setting their stall out in attack and creating a couple of early openings for Olise. The France international put Marco Carnesecchi to work on both occasions but was merely warming up for his evening's work.

Atalanta's resistance did not last long, with a short 12th-minute corner cutting them open. Olise laid it off to Gnabry, who picked open the defence and left a simple chance for Stanisic to tap in.

The goal emboldened the German side to take complete control and they followed with two more in the space of just three minutes midway through the half. Olise lined up a beauty, collecting the ball from Dayot Upamecano and holding off the attentions of three defenders before threading a left-footed effort into the bottom corner.

Olise was involved again as they made it three soon after, feeding Gnabry with a smart pass that was met with an equally smart finish.

Atalanta avoided further damage before the break but could easily have shipped another, Jackson twice going close and Gnabry clipping the crossbar with a sweet hit.

There were three substitutions at the break as both sides made changes but the impact was minimal, with Jackson making it third time lucky seven minutes after the restart after linking with Luis Díaz on a breakaway.

Bayern's hunger was not yet satisfied, Alphonso Davies powering upfield and unleashing Olise. Once again he teased the defenders, sweeping the ball on to his dangerous left boot and ripping a curling effort into the net.

Musiala cushioned a volley to convert after good work from Jackson, his first strike since the previous round against PSV, and only the woodwork stopped Upamecano ringing up a seventh.

There were only seconds left when Pasalic forced the ball over after Jonas Urbig's save from Nikola Krstovic but it was cold comfort for the home fans.
