In South Africa, patients suffering from rare diseases are said to be fighting a battle between death and insolvency because the innovative treatments they need to survive are often unaffordable.
This was heard on Friday, on the second day of the SA Medical Association (SAMA) conference, where delegates spoke about how funding impacted the development of innovative healthcare solutions.
Campaigning for Cancer CEO Lauren Pretorius said they knew there had been huge medical advancements, but that meant nothing if the patients could not access it.
