The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned of severe thunderstorms and possible flooding in several parts of the country on Boxing Day, except for the western regions, which are bracing themselves for hot to very hot conditions.
Impact-based warnings
A yellow Level 2 warning was issued for severe thunderstorms with heavy downpours, leading to flooding of susceptible roads, settlements, and low-lying bridges/areas, excessive lightning, and large amounts of small hail in Gauteng, the eastern part of the Free State, the southern part of Limpopo, places over the North West, the Highveld, and the escarpment of Mpumalanga.
Weather outlook for Friday & Saturday, 26 - 27 December 2025.

In the SAWS’ colour-coded weather warning system, yellow indicates a moderate risk of impact that requires caution and awareness, while orange indicates that a higher-risk impact is expected, requiring increased attention and preparation. The SAWS uses the numbers to indicate the likelihood of weather-based impacts occurring. Levels 2 and 6 are high, and Level 4 is low.
