A knock on the door and those dreaded six words, "there has been a terrible accident", completely changed the life of a Nelson Mandela Bay mother on Wednesday afternoon when she heard her son had been buried alive and later died.

Nokuzola Bente heard from her son's supervisors that he and a colleague were buried alive when the walls of the trench they were working in collapsed.

An emotional Nokuzola struggled to speak through the tears during News24's visit to the family's home on Thursday.
