In August, Western Cape High Court Judge Daniel Thulare handed down a sentence against a man who strangled his wife and then buried her in a shallow grave to get their house for himself and his new girlfriend.

Thulare sentenced the man to life in prison and also ordered various government departments, including the City of Cape Town and its mayor, to protect the property rights of the couple's child.

It is a judgment in which Thulare appears determined to make sure that the father is deprived of the property – the proceeds of crime – and that the child gets his mother's assets, all this while relatives have made bombshell claims of secret affairs that could alter the child's claim to the estate under customary property rules.
