Crime Intelligence legal head and long-time whistleblower Dennis Chili was fired after he was criminally charged for shoplifting in a bizarre case bearing the hallmarks of an apparent stitch-up.

He is alleged to have shoplifted an air fryer from a Checkers store in October last year, providing what, he says, is an all-too-convenient basis to fire him.

In the dying days of state capture, Chili played a key role in scuppering a dubious R45 million procurement splurge that was to bankroll votes at the ANC's 2017 elective conference, according to an Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) probe.
