Bulk water distributer Rand Water was holed up in a meeting with Merafong Municipality officials on Monday that resulted in an agreement to pay an R800 million debt to the tune of R40 million each month.

Municipal manager Dumisani Mabuza said in a statement on Monday that if the municipality fails to pay off its debt, the debt will balloon to R1 billion which would generate R10 million a month in interest alone.

Merafong, situated in the far west of Gauteng, has spent days without water after a Rand Water pipe burst on Friday on the R501 between Carletonville and East Driefontein. The entire Carletonville area and neighbouring areas such as Fochville and Welverdiend have been left high and dry in a continuing outage that Mabuza says should be resolved on Monday.
