Eight people have died and two have been left in a critical condition after a collision on the N2 highway, near Scottburgh in KwaZulu-Natal.

According to IPSS Medical Rescue, paramedics responded to the accident on Sunday night.

“On arrival, paramedics were met with a horrific scene. A van with 10 occupants had rear-ended a truck, resulting in two occupants being critically injured. Sadly, the remaining eight occupants of the van had sustained fatal injuries and were declared deceased on scene,” said IPSS spokesperson Kelsey-Jae Meyrick.

“The two critically injured patients were stabilised on scene and transported to a nearby hospital under the care of an IPSS Medical Rescue Advanced Life Support paramedic and EMRS.”

Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) spokesperson Simon Zwane said that the van appeared to have driven into the truck that was driving slowly on the left lane.

Among the dead were five children. Zwane said that they are aged between two and four years old.

“The cause of the crash will be subject to an investigation by the Road Traffic Management Corporation and the police,” added Zwane.
