Five people were killed in a motor vehicle accident in Cato Ridge, KwaZulu-Natal, in the early hours of Sunday morning.
ALS Paramedics Services spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said they responded to a single-vehicle collision in Eddie Hagen Drive.
"Paramedics responded to the horrific collision just before 06:00 on Sunday morning and found emergency personnel already attending to victims," he said.
According to ALS, the driver of the vehicle had lost control and appears to have crashed into a concrete drain.
It's understood that the vehicle contained people who were transporting a family member – who had allegedly been assaulted and stabbed – to the local clinic.

Jamieson added of the six people in the vehicle, four had been declared dead on the scene.
"While paramedics were working on the remaining two, one of the patients went into a state of cardiac arrest. Despite the emergency services' best efforts the patient also passed away on the scene."
"The total number of people [dead] is five, one person [is being] treated in the hospital with serious injuries," he said.
The road has since been closed by police to clear the scene.
