A former Student Representative Council (SRC) member from Rustenburg TVET College has been arrested for allegedly defrauding first-year students of R14 000 in NSFAS allowances.
The 24-year-old suspect allegedly misused her privileged access to students’ financial accounts to illegally withdraw the funds in 2023.
Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale said at the time that first-year National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) funded students sought assistance from the student leader in accessing their allowances.

Mogale said as an SRC member at the time, the suspect had prior access to students’ Tenet accounts.
Mogale said:
It is alleged that during 2023, the suspect used this access to log into students’ accounts without authorisation
“It is further alleged that she withdrew funds at retail stores and subsequently explained to students how to access their allowances after misappropriating the money.”
Mogale confirmed that a total of R14 000 was unlawfully withdrawn from seven students’ accounts.
“A case docket was registered and handed over to the Hawks for further investigation, which culminated in the arrest of the suspect,” Mogale said.
She said the suspect was arrested in Rustenburg on Tuesday by the Hawks’ Serious Economic Offences Section at Pretoria headquarters.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Rustenburg Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
