From writing op-eds to making speeches (to public speaking) and taking a three-hour test, optimistic DA candidates had to endure gruelling, three to four hour examinations, which saw many party members falling out of the party's 11-step election process.  

The DA's federal council chairperson, Helen Zille, said the party received over 1 300 applications. She said all prospective candidates had to write the exams. 

"All the current incumbent MPs and MPLs passed. A few councillors didn't make it," she added.
