The Gauteng department of education could be held liable for damages of more than R60 million following allegations that an employee of Sevelile Primary School in Soweto started a fire to burn disused documents, which got out of control and burnt down the Enhazer Christian Church auditorium nearby.
According to the church’s legal claim, which City Press has seen, the alleged incident took place in August last year and the department has been dragging its feet in finding a resolution, even though the church has received an admission from the school employee, Mgwena Ngodwane.
