As Valentine's Day approaches, the Gauteng government has warned people engaging in unprotected sexual activities to be cautious of increasing sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV.

The Gauteng health department issued the warning on Sunday, highlighting the alarming increase in newly acquired STIs, particularly among men.

"Between April and December 2023, 167 109 males presented at public health facilities across Gauteng and 67 400 were treated for male urethritis syndrome (MUS). The MUS data accurately reflects newly acquired STIs," Health MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko said.
