Imaginary court proceedings, inappropriate and threatening WhatsApp messages to journalists, recruiting informants for intelligence units and running pyramid schemes – these are just some of the charges brought against magistrates in South Africa's lower courts.

On Wednesday, the Portfolio Committee on Justice heard about the delays in either disciplining or axing errant magistrates who broke the very law they were meant to uphold.

In Limpopo, a magistrate at the Lenyenye Magistrate's Court was hauled before a disciplinary hearing for reckless conduct.
