When President Cyril Ramaphosa takes the stand behind the podium in the makeshift National Assembly Chamber of the Cape Town City Hall, it could well be his swansong State of the Nation Address (SONA).

Opposition parties are smelling blood because the party Ramaphosa leads, the ANC, is polling well below 50%, meaning a change of government is more than a pipedream for the first time in the 30 years of South African democracy.

A poll by Ipsos, released two days before SONA, predicts the ANC will get hardly 40% of the vote. This is just one of several polls showing the ANC's decline in electoral support.
