In key ways, Israel today is very much like South Africa was under apartheid, the state of Palestine told the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Monday - though it features some modern innovations.

The ICJ is holding week-long hearings into the consequences of Israel's occupation of Palestinian territory at the request of the General Assembly of the United Nations.

Palestine, which presented its case on Monday, argues that the court must declare Israel's occupation illegal, and that it "must end immediately, totally and unconditionally".

South Africans need to be in the know if we want to create a prosperous future. News24 has kept the country informed for 25 years, and we're about to enter a new chapter of fearless journalism.
