- Seven-year-old Nhlalwenhle “Nhlalo” Magwaza vanished on 23 November, just 200 metres from her Umbumbulu home after visiting a local tuckshop.

- Renegades Search & Rescue teams and the SAPS have conducted extensive ground searches with K9 units, but there has been no trace of the missing girl.
The deafening silence with no leads has become unbearable for Smangele Magwaza, whose seven-year-old daughter, Nhlalwenhle “Nhlalo” Magwaza, vanished without a trace over a month ago from near their Umbumbulu home in KwaZulu-Natal.
What began as a trip to buy sweets transformed into every parent’s worst nightmare, with the Grade 2 pupil’s disappearance on 23 November leaving her family clinging to rapidly fading hope.
“Whoever took my child, I appeal to your human nature, have mercy on her, especially because you’ve spent time with her and have seen what kind of person she is: she is a loving child, please let her go so she can come home,” the devastated mother pleaded on Monday.
The afternoon Nhlalo disappeared, she had asked permission to visit their familiar neighbourhood tuckshop in Umbumbulu, which is just south of Durban.
Her two aunts accompanied her to the shop and walked her back close to home before leaving her just four houses away – about 200 metres from home.
“They (her aunts) saw her running towards home, and they continued on their way to where they were going. Seeing she wasn’t returning, I went out looking for her, and could not find her. I walked until I got to the tuckshop, but there was no sign of her,” Magwaza recounted.
She said that after reporting her daughter missing, she also posted an appeal on social media platforms and included her cellphone number for anyone with information to contact her.

Nhlalwenhle Magwaza was wearing this pink dress on the day she disappeared.
Magwaza said that two days after reporting her daughter missing, a chilling ransom demand shattered any remaining hope that this was a simple case of a lost child.
“The person told me said they were asking for this amount because they knew my financial situation,” said the unemployed mother, describing how kidnappers apparently demanded R2 500 before accepting her counter-offer of R300.
The alleged kidnappers instructed Magwaza to choose a drop-off location.
When she suggested a well-known bus stop, they rejected that location, apparently recognising the busy area’s risks.
She then proposed a secluded sports ground, which they accepted. However, the exchange never materialised when the callers refused to give Magwaza proof that Nhlalo was with them.
“We didn’t follow through with this because the person refused to provide any proof that they actually had my child,” Magwaza explained.

She said that a subsequent WhatsApp lead, which described Nhlalo’s shoes with uncanny accuracy, sparked a community search that ultimately proved futile.
“The message said my child was near a school that was a long way from their home. We gathered the community and the CPF, and we went out to that area. When we were almost there, I received another WhatsApp message which said we would not get the child back. I believe that they could have been watching us and saw that I was not coming alone.”
Police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo said police were investigating cases of kidnapping and extortion.
Dawn Gounden from Renegades Search & Rescue confirmed their ongoing efforts to find the little girl. She said there had been an extensive search using dogs in the semi-rural area with no leads.
“The public is urged to assist with any information that is verified and can bring closure,” said Gounden.
Nhlalwenhle was last seen wearing a pink knitted dress with white stripes.
