Limpopo police are searching for a 40-year-old tractor driver who is believed to have been swept away while attempting to cross a flooded river at Rankin’s Pass in the Waterberg District on Monday.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the driver’s employer contacted police after receiving information that the driver was approaching the low-water bridge at Tweestroom while operating the tractor.

Ledwaba stated that, according to reports, the driver attempted to cross the flooded bridge but misaligned the tractor with the bridge’s width, causing it to veer off and plunge into the river.

“The driver was not seen again following the incident.”

Search and rescue teams were immediately activated and conducted a search; however, by Wednesday afternoon, the driver had still not been found.

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe urged motorists to avoid crossing flooded rivers, low-water bridges and roads covered by water, warning that no destination was worth risking a life.

Police investigations and search operations are continuing.
