EFF leader Julius Malema used Chief Justice Raymond Zondo's state capture reports – which he dismissed as having an "anti-black" agenda – to bolster his party's case that President Cyril Ramaphosa should be impeached over the Phala Phala scandal.

Ramaphosa avoided that fate on 13 December 2022, when the ANC used its majoritarian muscle to block the president from facing an impeachment inquiry.

ANC MPs did not accept an independent panel's finding that there was a case for Ramaphosa to answer over the 2020 theft of at least $580 000 from a sofa at his Phala Phala farm in Limpopo, and its alleged subsequent cover-up.
