The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued warnings of severe thunderstorms and extreme heat in parts of the country on Monday, with a Yellow Level 2 alert for heavy downpours that could trigger localised flooding, excessive lightning, and small hail in several provinces.

Impact-based warnings

Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms associated with heavy downpours leading to localised flooding of susceptible roads, settlements and low-lying bridges/areas, excessive lightning and large amounts of small hail are expected in places over the central and southern parts of Limpopo, escarpment, and Mpumalanga Highveld, the extreme eastern parts of both the Free State and North West, northern parts of Gauteng, and the coast and adjacent interior of KwaZulu-Natal.

In the SAWS’ colour-coded weather warning system, yellow indicates a moderate risk of impact that requires caution and awareness, while orange indicates that a higher-risk impact is expected, requiring increased attention and preparation. SAWS uses the numbers to indicate the likelihood of weather-based impacts occurring. Levels 2 and 6 are high, and Level 4 is low.
