The National Assembly early Tuesday evening passed an amended motion that South Africa’s diplomatic relations with Israel should be suspended.

However, the consular staff doesn’t have to start packing up just yet. Chair of chairs Cedrick Frolick, who presided over the plenary, explained that the motion is “politically persuasive, rather than instructive”, like legislation would be. This means the decision on whether the embassy will be closed still rests with the government.

The original motion, which was debated during a mini-plenary last week, was moved by the EFF leader Julius Malema.
