News24 | Parts of Joburg without water after second pipe burst in two weeks

For the second time in two weeks, residents in parts of Johannesburg are without water.

This comes after another burst outlet pipe at the Honeydew reservoir in North Riding, Roodepoort. 

Last week, residents faced a four-day outage after a pipe burst at the same reservoir.

Johannesburg Water said that the "major burst" was reported at around 21:00 on Sunday, and that it was impossible to estimate when taps would flow again, due to flooding at the site.

The Johannesburg Water team is currently on site and will be isolating (closing) the water supply to allow for assessment and determination of repairs needed.

"The site is flooded, with trenches and chambers flooded. Therefore, it could delay assessments to be completed as the trenches and chambers require the water to be pumped out," said Johannesburg Water.

"With assessments under way, there is no estimated time of restoration at his stage."

Last week's outage was caused when an outlet pipe burst at the Honeydew reservoir on Sunday.

It affected around 80 000 households as well as various informal settlements.

News24 previously reported that the GRP (glass-reinforced plastic) pipe had burst four times this year because it could not withstand the water's pressure and that, ultimately, the entire pipeline needed to be replaced.
