National Student Financial Aid Scheme (Nsfas) students make up an ever-increasing proportion of registered students at universities, but students who pay for themselves are by far the biggest headache when it comes to student debt.

On average, 42% of students at the seven largest universities study with Nsfas funds, but an average of 75% of the universities’ outstanding debt lies with those who pay for themselves or have bursaries.
