A three-person panel was appointed to probe whether unacceptable practices over time at Stellenbosch University's (SU) Wilgenhof men's residence "have been protected or covered up" by university staff, alumni or students.

The university announced on Tuesday the panel members would include advocate Nick de Jager SC, Dr Derek Swemmer, the former registrar of the University of the Free State, and Penny van der Bank, SU's deputy registrar for governance.

The appointment of the panel follows disturbing items that were discovered in two locked rooms in the Wilgenhof residence on 24 January, which included crude drawings depicting what appeared to be male sexual assault, black executioner-style hoods, and photographs of initiation practices dating back to 1900.
