Corruption-accused former Cabinet minister and ANC MP Malusi Gigaba says his decision to step aside from party activities is not an admission of guilt.

Gigaba, who appeared in court this week after being charged with fraud and corruption, clarified that he would also not resign as an MP after stepping aside from all ANC activities on Wednesday.

Gigaba, who is currently not taking any interviews, took to X to share the facts surrounding his situation through a video statement.

“I am not taking interviews at this stage, but here are the facts: I have stepped aside voluntarily, in full compliance with resolutions of the 55th National Conference and the ANC constitution. This is my own decision, guided by my revolutionary conscience and discipline. My desire is always to advance organisational integrity and my respect and love for my movement.”

He said:

The step-aside principle does not imply guilt on my side; it allows the legal process to continue without affecting the ANC.

“The matter before IDAC relates to an unproven allegation of an unsolicited benefit under Schedule 1. It is not a procurement matter.

“There is no indictment and no evidence of wrongdoing. I remain confident of the facts and continue to cooperate fully with the authorities. I will not participate in or comment on an internal ANC matter that has been finalised. When it concludes, I stand ready to resume my duties.”

Gigaba, who is the co-chairperson of Parliament’s Joint Standing Committee on Defence, was added as the fifth accused in the criminal case stemming from one of the biggest state capture scandals.

In an earlier statement, Gigaba’s private office said the step aside applied to ANC roles.

“Parliamentary processes follow their own rules and will be managed accordingly and lawfully,” said his spokesperson, Palesa Lethoba.

Lethoba added that Gigaba intended to return to his duties within the ANC.

“Dr Gigaba remains fully committed to the ANC constitution, its values, and its organisational integrity framework. Before taking this decision, he undertook a consultative process with the ANC’s leadership.

“He formally notified the secretary-general in writing on 19 November 2025, and held conversations with ANC leaders over the weekend, taking them into his confidence and ensuring that the organisation was fully informed of his intentions.

“This disciplined and transparent approach reflects his respect for the structures that govern the movement. Once the legal process concludes and the matter is resolved, he stands ready to resume his duties in full compliance with ANC policy, the step-aside framework adopted at the 55th National Conference, and the expectations of organisational renewal,” she said.

The ANC welcomed Gigaba’s decision to step aside.
