Extremely hot conditions are expected in parts of the Western Cape and Northern Cape, while severe thunderstorms with heavy rain persist in at least four provinces, including Gauteng, according to the South African Weather Service (SAWS).

Impact-based warnings

Yellow level 4 warning for severe thunderstorms. Potential dangers include heavy downpours, flooding, large amounts of small hail, strong winds, and excessive lightning are expected over the highveld of Mpumalanga and northern Gauteng.

Yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms. Potential dangers include heavy downpours, localised flooding, hail, strong winds, and lightning, which are likely over the southern Gauteng, the eastern Free State, southwestern Limpopo, and areas of the highveld and southern escarpment in Mpumalanga.

In the SAWS’s colour-coded weather warning system, yellow indicates a moderate risk of impact that requires caution and awareness, while orange indicates that higher-risk impact is expected, requiring increased attention and preparation.

SAWS uses the numbers to indicate the likelihood of weather-based impacts occurring. Levels 2 and 6 are high, and level 4 is low.
