- Durban metro police conducted high-visibility roadblocks and multidisciplinary operations over the weekend, leading to 32 arrests for traffic violations.
- Two SANDF members were among those arrested – one for alleged drunk driving and another for allegedly assaulting a police officer and obstructing duty.
- Authorities said law enforcement operations would intensify ahead of the summer holidays to curb road recklessness.
Two members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) were among 32 people arrested in eThekwini over the weekend as part of a targeted campaign led by the Durban metro police.
The operation cracked down on road traffic offences along the roads of the busy City targeting drunk-driving and other traffic violations.
According to the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality, a SANDF member was arrested for allegedly driving while under the influence, while another was arrested for assault.
Durban metro police spokesperson Colonel Boysie Zungu said the soldiers were processed at the South African Police Service’s Wentworth station.
“The first soldier was arrested for drink-driving, while the second was arrested for obstruction of duty and assault on a police officer,” Zungu said.
He added:
A total of 15 drivers were arrested during operations on Friday, and 17 drivers – including the two soldiers – were arrested on Saturday for drinking and driving.
Zungu said that even in heavy rain, officers were out in full force, conducting roadblocks and high-visibility patrols across the City.
“If you choose to drink and drive, we will find you and arrest you,” he said.

He added that operations would intensify throughout the week and over weekends to ensure the safety of all road users.
“As we approach the summer holidays, road recklessness tends to increase. We want to assure the public that our officers are prepared and vigilant and will act decisively against any traffic violations,” Zungu said.
