The area was identified by police as a hotspot where cyclists often become victims of mugging in the vicinity of the Lower Church Street bridge.

"At about 08:45, they noticed an unidentified man trying to rob a cyclist. The members gave chase and apprehended the 34-year-old foreign national for attempted robbery.

Swartbooi said:

Once charged, the suspect is expected to make a court appearance in the Cape Town Central Magistrate's Court on the mentioned charge.

At the end of last month, police and other law enforcement officers conducted an integrated operation following numerous complaints of robberies involving cyclists and pedestrians at Lower Church Street and the N1.

During this operation, 18 undocumented persons were arrested. Officers conducted searches and arrested three suspects for the possession of drugs and one for the possession of a dangerous weapon.
