News24 | UPDATE | Historic Manor House out of danger after Laborie Wine Estate fire contained

A fire which broke out at the Laborie Wine Estate on Saturday afternoon has since been contained.

A blaze that broke out at midday at the iconic Laborie Wine Estate in Paarl, has been contained but firefighters are keeping an eye on the area amid strong winds.

Drakenstein and Stellenbosch fire and rescue services officials, together with their counterparts from the Cape Winelands district, battled the blaze alongside the Fire Protection Association of SA, as well as DFW Fire and Rescue NPC.

According to the Drakenstein municipality, the fire destroyed the Cucina Di Giovanni restaurant as well as the first wing of the accommodation facilities.

But, in an update on Saturday afternoon, the municipality said the estate’s Manor House and second accommodation wing were no longer in danger after firefighters contained the blaze.

It cautioned that the wind was still strong, but said teams were closely monitoring the area.

“Challenging wind conditions continue to complicate firefighting efforts. However, all teams remain fully mobilised and are working tirelessly to bring the fire under control as quickly and safely as possible,” it said.

The municipality advised the public to keep the main road clear for emergency vehicles.
