A four-storey temple under construction has collapsed in Redcliffe, Durban, trapping several workers beneath concrete debris.
- A fifth body was recovered from the rubble of a four-storey temple building that collapsed on Friday.
- KZN Premier Thami Ntuli and MEC for Cooperative Governance & Traditional Affairs Thulasizwe Buthelezi visited the scene on Sunday.
- The cause of the collapse is still under investigation.
The death toll after the collapse of the four-storey temple building in Redcliffe, Verulam, has risen to five after one more body was recovered from the rubble on Sunday.
Prem Balram, spokesperson for private security company Reaction Unit SA (RUSA), said: “At this stage, it remains unconfirmed whether any additional individuals may still be trapped beneath the rubble.”
KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli and MEC for Cooperative Governance & Traditional Affairs Rev Thulasizwe Buthelezi visited the scene on Sunday to support and offer their condolences to the affected families.

“This is a very difficult moment for the province, [the premier’s presence] here this morning is to share that he feels your pain.
“He has just come to see for himself what actually happened and how we can hold each other’s hands going forward,” Buthelezi told members of the community.
Eleven people – two women and nine men – were rescued on Friday and transported to nearby hospitals for medical treatment after the building collapsed.
The first body was recovered shortly after the collapse and three more were retrieved on Saturday.
The cause of the temple’s collapse is still under investigation.
