  • A group of about 12 stormed the tavern in the early hours of Sunday morning.
  • They continued their violent spree as they fled the scene, shooting at bystanders on the street and an e-hailing driver down the road.

Nine people were killed in a shooting at the KwaNoxolo tavern, in Bekkersdal, on Gauteng’s West Rand, on Sunday morning.

The incident took place just before 01:00, when a group of about 12 people who had been travelling in a white kombi and silver sedan vehicle randomly opened fire at tavern patrons. They then fled the scene, continuing their violent spree as they drove off.

According to police, a total of nine people were killed.

This included five people at the tavern, three people on the street outside, and another person further down the road.

Another 10 people were injured.

Speaking to ENCA, Gauteng Deputy Provincial Commissioner Major General Fred Kekana said that an e-hailing driver was among those shot.

Police said they had mobilised all necessary resources, including Forensic Crime Scene Management and Crime Intelligence and that the motive for the shooting was yet to be determined.

In the meantime, a manhunt for those responsible has been launched.

Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni was expected to visit the scene later on Sunday.
