Justine Mnisi left his home in a village in Nkomazi, Mpumalanga, bound for Stellenbosch University with dreams of studying environmental management and supporting his family.

But the 20-year-old student, the first in his family to go to university, has spent the past two weeks since the university opened, sleeping in the SRC offices, on a squash court, on the steps of the administration building, and now in a church hall.

This is because of a dire shortage of student accommodation at Stellenbosch University, caused partly by the fact that the "2024 uptake for the academic year was exceptionally high," said university spokesperson Martin Viljoen.
