Ayanda Mbele loves a challenge.

Twelve years ago, when she discovered that women were severely underrepresented in the spinning community, a fire inside her was ignited.

“People don’t believe that women can do it,” she told News24.

Lady P says she loves that women are joining the spinning world in their numbers.

Spinning is a motorsport where skilled drivers intentionally make cars spin at high speeds for entertainment – often outdoors.

The sport’s most well-known and praised stars are men, but Mbele has made it her life’s mission to change that narrative.

Wheelz N Smoke has created an arena that brings spinners together in a safe environment.

Alongside her partner in 2013, she established Wheelz N Smoke, the first spinning arena on the East Rand.

“We took spinning from the streets, and then we gave it a home so that people can come and enjoy this art in a safe environment without endangering anyone.”

Five years after opening their doors, they launched Spinderella, an annual spinning show exclusive to women drivers.

Women don’t have to fight for recognition in the sport and are now front and centre.

“Spinderella gives them a platform to play together and elevate car spinning,” Mbele said.

For Leticia Venter, a spinner from the North West, the sport is more than just speed and skill–it’s a lifeline and a safe space.

“I love spinning because it releases a lot of stress. I like to get my mind off things, and I run to my car and spin my car.”

As a result, what began as a subculture dominated by men is now evolving into a more inclusive and diverse sport.

“In terms of support, we are still crawling, but we will get there because women are bringing fire in car spinning.”
