Popular Kenyan comedian and internet sensation Elsa Majimbo has voiced her strong disapproval of the common African tradition of sending money back home to extended family.
In an Instagram post, Majimbo openly criticized the tradition of sending money to extended family, declaring that she “absolutely hates” it as an unfair cultural expectation on Africans working abroad.
While some have praised Elsa Majimbo for her honesty, others have criticised her for seemingly dismissing a practice that is deeply ingrained in African culture.
She said, “Sending money back home to your extended family is such a common African practice that I absolutely hate. I so much hate my dad doing it, and I don’t even know any of my extended family.
“I saw him doing it with his brothers, with his sisters, with his grandparents, like everyone in the family. As long as you have a job, they expect you to share that money.
“That is something I would not be participating in; I already knew I would never participate in it. Like, how do you come and tell me my kids are hungry? Yes, they are because you are lazy.
“Get up your a$$, get a job, and feed your kids. There is this extended family. She used to ask my dad for money even before I was born. She texted me and asked me for money.
“You have been asking my dad for money since before I was born, when I was raised and grew a job, and feed your kids.
“You have been asking my dad for money since before I was born, when I was raised and grew up. Now you are asking me for money.”
