To the south of China, the legendary province of Guangxi is a natural fortress. Hidden away amongst spectacular mountain peaks, villages deserted by the younger generations still survive cut off from the modern world as no roadway allows access to them! Rather than investing in an expensive and unprofitable road network, the Chinese government has chosen to oblige the last inhabitants to leave their homes and land. In exchange, they will be resettled for free on the doorsteps of major cities.

As with many others, the village of Xiao Jiang will not be spared. But one man has decided otherwise. To save his home village, Yuan Feng HUANG dreams of building a road, digging through the mountain over more than 5 kilometres, a titanic construction site for one man alone! This was his plan for his retirement. But at the age of 48, Yuan Feng learns that he has cancer, and that his days are numbered. So, he’s decided to build the road now! If he succeeds, Xiao Jiang will be saved and the inhabitants’ lives will be transformed forever...
