The chances that an asteroid spotted last year by space scientists could strike Earth in around 8 years time have increased slightly.

Asteroid 2024 YR4 is estimated to be between 40 and 90 meters wide and following a course that will bring it close to Earth in December 2032.
 
Astronomers now estimate that the chance of it striking our planet is 2% - or 1 in 50 - up very slightly from their previous predictions.

In the coming years scientists will be able to identify the probability of a collision with far more accuracy and are likely to to rule it out.

If the space rock is on a direct course for Earth a mission could be mounted to deflect it from its current course.

In a joint news conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Donald Trump said he envisions that the US could take ownership of the Gaza strip.

In Ukraine, authorities say a Russian attack on the southern city of Mykolaiv has killed at least two people.
Meanwhile, Russia says a nuclear power plant was among the targets during a massive Ukrainian drone attack.
Moscow said on Wednesday that the country’s energy infrastructure had come under attack by at least 100 drones overnight. Ukraine also reported strikes. The continuing barrages were accompanied by barbs from the two countries’ presidents, suggesting little prospect of peace talks.
The Russian Ministry of Defence said on Telegram that 104 drones were involved in raids across western Russia, many targeting power and oil facilities.
Local officials claimed that air defence systems had destroyed one drone that had attempted to strike the nuclear power plant in the western region of Smolensk.

The crisis in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo is intensifying - with the AFP News agency reporting that more than 100 people have been killed in the city of Goma as fighting between the M23 rebel group and government forces escalates. The news agency says nearly one thousand others are wounded, based on a tally drawn from city hospitals.
The UN says that dead bodies have been found lying in the streets as M23 fighters push further into Goma - a city of two million people.
The UN says hospitals in Goma are struggling to handle the numbers of people injured.

Rebels from the Congolese M23 movement say they have entered the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo city of Goma and taken control.

Sitting on the border with Rwanda and the shores of Lake Kivu, Goma is a vital trading and transport hub, home to more than a million people and within reach of mining towns supplying metals and minerals in high demand such as gold, tin and coltan.

The rebels say they now control the city, but the Congolese government says its troops still hold some key locations.

Heavy artillery and gunfire has been heard in the city throughout the day.

The M23 are led by ethnic Tutsis, who say they needed to take up arms to protect the rights of the minority group.

US President Donald Trump said he wants Egypt and Jordan to take in Palestinians from Gaza, which he described as a “demolition site”.

In a phone call this weekend, President Trump said he had told Jordan's King Abdullah: "I'd love you to take on more, because I'm looking at the whole Gaza Strip right now and it's a mess, it's a real mess."

Most of Gaza's two million residents have been displaced in the 15 months of war, which has flattened much of Gaza's infrastructure.

Hamas has vowed to oppose any such action, and the comments will likely outrage Palestinians in Gaza.

Some on Israel’s far-right want to return to Gaza, and have welcomed President Trump’s comments.
