Tamer Qarmout, an associate professor in public policy at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies, has told Al Jazeera that US President Trump’s plan to “own” Gaza is not likely to come to fruition.
“We have been seeing American politicians, statesmen, retreating back from what Trump proposed two days ago,” he said.
“Now they’re talking about offering their technical expertise in a very humane way,” he added. Qarmout, who hails from Gaza, added that Palestinians would be in favour of this as long as it comes in the context of Palestinian dignity, where they have control over the rebuilding of their own homes.
“If the Trump admin is eyeing lucrative contracts or deals that come out of reconstruction … we’re talking about a huge bill for Gaza … if that’s what he’s eyeing, then that’s fine, we welcome American expertise whatever it is. But [it needs to be] in the context of a Palestinian state, in the context of preserving Palestinian dignity,” he added.
He said the world should “wait and see” as diplomacy between the US and its regional partners takes shape.

Democrats gathered outside the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Monday after Elon Musk announced earlier in the day that U.S. President Donald Trump had agreed the agency should be shut down.

For more than six decades, the agency oversaw humanitarian aid, development and security programs in some 120 countries around the world.

Staffers have been told to stay out of the Washington headquarters and many have reported being locked out of the agency’s computer systems.

“This is how dictators are made,” said Democrat Rep. Ilhan Omar of the decision to shutter the agency and layoff employees, adding that the executive branch doesn't have the power to close the agency.

“This is a killer in terms of their cutoff of the HIV and AIDS preemption. It’s a killer in terms of anti-malarial education. It’s a killer in terms of all of the efforts to shutdown global viruses,” added Rep. Jamie Raskin.

Musk, Trump and multiple Republican lawmakers have accused USAID of promoting liberal causes.

The Mexican president, Claudia Sheinbaum, has said the US and Mexico have agreed to “pause” tariffs threatened by Donald Trump for one month after the two leaders held “a good conversation”. The US president upended US-Mexico ties over the weekend when he announced the 25% levies and accused Sheinbaum’s administration of engaging in an “intolerable alliance” with Mexican crime groups. Sheinbaum rejected that “slanderous” accusation, but on Monday morning struck a softer note as she announced “a series of agreements” with Trump. Mexico had agreed to send 10,000 members of its national guard “to prevent drug trafficking from Mexico to the US, in particular of fentanyl”. In return, the US had agreed to work to prevent high-powered weapons crossing the border into Mexico. The tariffs would be paused for one month as a result, Sheinbaum added.

A small medical transport plane crashed into several buildings in north-east Philadelphia on Friday evening, killing all six people on board and injuring people on the ground.

The plane had been on a medical transport mission, carrying a child patient and her mother, and four crew members.

Flight logs show the plane was in the air "for only a minute" before it crashed, Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker said in a statement.
