A Nigerian film, ‘Dara – A Port Harcourt Love Story’, has won the Best Feature Film award at the DC Independent Film Forum held in Washington, D.C, United States of America.
The coming-of-age romantic drama, set in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, earned recognition after impressing the festival jury with its storytelling and vivid portrayal of youth culture.
Directed by Bobby Rak and executive produced by Mfon Essiet, the film follows the story of Idara, a young campus influencer navigating friendship, love, loyalty and rivalry within a Nigerian university environment.
According to the organisers, the film stood out among several international entries because of its “fresh voice, emotionally resonant storytelling and vivid portrayal of contemporary youth culture.”
Speaking on the recognition, Essiet described the award as a significant milestone for the project and for Nigerian independent filmmakers seeking global visibility.
He noted that the honour demonstrates that stories rooted in local communities can resonate with audiences beyond Nigeria.
“This recognition at the DC Independent Film Forum affirms that powerful stories from our communities can resonate far beyond our borders,” he said.
The DC Independent Film Forum, held annually in Washington, provides a platform for independent filmmakers and emerging voices from around the world to showcase their work.
Shot largely in Port Harcourt, the film highlights the culture and experiences of young people in the oil-rich Niger Delta city while exploring themes such as ambition, identity and relationships.
